Early careers will follow a structured development offer to accelerate the acquisition of foundational technical skills, experience and knowledge, and application in the business world. The programme supports transition from university to discipline professional and, through our 'Elevate' training programme, provides a framework of ‘non-technical’ skills to support building personal effectiveness, helping you to grow both personally and professionally.
Early careers will build their experience through challenging development assignments, grow a toolkit of transferable skills for the future, and have a dedicated network of support, as well as a vibrant Early Careers community, to help them succeed.
Job description for Petroleum Engineering Graduate role
As a petroleum engineer (PE), you will be part of Subsurface organisation that sits under the Upstream business group. In your career, you may start in a Production Management Team, gaining hands-on exposure to daily operations, well performance, site activities and practical problem solving. A subsequent assignment in a Depletion Management Team can broaden your subsurface experience through reservoir surveillance, depletion planning, forecasting and longer-term field management. In Upstream, we find and develop hydrocarbon resources, operate oil and gas production assets, as well as refineries, pipelines and terminals around the world; our vision is to become an industry-leading hydrocarbons business and the engine room of our integrated energy company; we will do this by always putting safety first, reducing carbon emissions, improving efficiency, integrating across the value chain, and flexibly deploying talent to the solve the biggest issues. At the heart of Subsurface lies our purpose to be a digitally enabled and agile team that can apply and nurture its subsurface skills to find, develop and manage a portfolio of high-value, carbon-efficient resources.
From exploration to production, our petroleum and reservoir engineers play a crucial role in bp’s field operation success. Petroleum Engineers are a key link between design, planning and operations of wells, facilities, reservoir, and storage container development. You’ll be adding value through performance optimization through system modelling and developing well intervention requirements to maintain or improve the production of hydrocarbons and CO2 storage throughout the life of the field. As a Petroleum Engineer, you will work at the interface between subsurface, wells, production and operations, using engineering analysis and field data to understand well and reservoir performance and identify opportunities to safely optimise production and injection.
Depending on your bp location and role, you will gain broad capability, primarily through job experience, in: Reservoir and Well Performance, System Modelling and Optimization, Well Management: for example, in
- monitoring and analysing well, reservoir and production performance;
- supporting surveillance and reservoir management activities;
- building and maintaining well and network models;
- identifying production and injection optimisation opportunities;
- contributing to production forecasting and depletion planning;
- supporting well testing, new-well start-ups and well interventions; and
- working across Subsurface, Production, Wells and Operations to solve integrated technical problems.
Petroleum Engineering combines subsurface technical work with close connection to field operations. Depending on the assignment, graduates will gain site or offshore exposure and support operational activities such as well start-ups, interventions and production optimization.
