This role partners with Operations, Asset Management Engineering, Development, Construction, Procurement, Accounting, and executive leadership to improve cost visibility, forecast accuracy, OpEx and CapEx discipline and investment outcomes across the data center portfolio.

The ideal candidate combines strong financial modeling and variance analysis skills with a practical understanding of data center operations, construction, power, maintenance, and infrastructure investment.
Key Responsibilities
Operating Expense Analysis & Performance
- Own financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting for data center operating expenses across sites, regions, and cost categories.
- Analyze actual OpEx against budget, forecast, prior periods, and operational drivers; explain variances and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop cost models for repairs and maintenance, facilities services, staffing, and other site expenses.
- Partner with Operations and Engineering to connect financial performance with utilization, capacity, energy consumption, equipment reliability, maintenance activity, and service levels.
- Establish site and portfolio dashboards for maintenance spend, controllable OpEx, and fixed and variable costs.
Expense Forecasting & Business Partnership
- Lead the OpEx budget, rolling forecast, and long-range cost planning processes for operating data centers.
- Work with site and functional leaders to develop assumptions, validate run rates, identify risks and opportunities, and improve forecast accountability, ensuring that spending is in line with budget and if not, that overruns are self-funded with offsetting reductions at the site level (offsetting with reductions in other spend categories and/or future months) or if needed, at the metro or regional level
- Evaluate vendor contracts, maintenance strategies, sourcing initiatives, and efficiency programs to quantify savings, cost avoidance, and lifecycle impacts.
- Translate detailed cost analysis into concise recommendations for executives and non-finance stakeholders.
Capital Expense Analysis & Project Controls
- Lead financial analysis and forecasting for data center development, expansion, infrastructure replacement, and sustaining-capital programs.
- Monitor commitments, actual spend, accruals, and cost-to-complete against approved budgets, funding plans, construction schedules, and authorization levels.
- Maintain project and portfolio views of approved, committed, spent, forecast, and remaining capital, with clear variance explanations and escalation thresholds.
- Partner with Operations leadership to manage maintenance capital expense within industry guidelines - typically between 3-5% against total revenue (total = stabilized + expansion assets)
- Evaluate investment economics and lifecycle costs using net present value, internal rate of return, payback, cash yield, and return on invested capital, as appropriate.
- Support capital approval materials, investment committee reviews, capitalization analysis, and post-investment performance assessments.
Reporting, Data & Team Leadership
- Prepare monthly and quarterly expense reporting for executives, investors, and board-level audiences.
- Partner with Accounting during period-end close to ensure accurate expense classification, accruals, capitalization, and alignment between actual results and forecasts.
- Improve expense reporting and analysis through planning systems, automation, business intelligence, and self-service dashboards.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, cost analysis, project finance, corporate finance, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated ownership of OpEx and CapEx budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, management reporting, and financial modeling.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, expense classification, accruals, capitalization, cash flow, capital allocation, and project economics.
- Experience translating operational activity into financial forecasts.
- Advanced spreadsheet skills and experience with ERP, enterprise planning, project-cost, and business intelligence tools.
- Proven ability to partner with operations, engineering, construction, procurement, and accounting leaders.
- Excellent analytical, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Preferred
- Experience in data centers, digital infrastructure, real estate, energy, utilities, telecommunications, construction, or another capital-intensive industry.
- Knowledge of data center facilities maintenance, capacity metrics, construction cost controls, and infrastructure lifecycle planning.
- Experience with project accounting and capital approval governance.
- MBA, CPA, CFA, CMA, or other relevant advanced degree or professional designation.
