About the role
The Team
Are you a CAD Technician with experience in substation protection and control (P&C) design? We are looking for a specialist P&C CAD Technician to join our multidisciplinary Engineering team, delivering detailed design for AIS/GIS substations from 33kV to 400kV on transmission and distribution (T&D) projects that support the energy transition and net-zero goals.
Cundall is a global engineering consultancy known for innovative and sustainable design across energy, infrastructure and the built environment. With a 50-year history, we deliver projects that shape the future of energy systems, from grid transmission and distribution to renewable energy and critical infrastructure.
Our Power Systems team specialises in high-voltage design, protection and control systems and technical advisory services, delivering technically demanding projects in the UK and internationally.
The Role
As a P&C CAD Technician, you will be responsible for preparing detailed design drawings and documentation for electrical protection and control systems used in substations and transmission and distribution networks. Working under the guidance of P&C Engineers, you will create and update wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, multicore cable interface drawings and other CAD drawings to support engineering and construction.
This is first and foremost a specialist P&C technician role, and the primary focus will be P&C drawing production. For those who are interested, there will also be opportunities to develop broader BIM and digital-delivery capability, such as supporting the development and coordination of substation BIM models, depending on project requirements and the successful candidate’s experience and interests. BIM experience is welcome in addition to, but not as a substitute for, specialist P&C CAD competence.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and modify CAD drawings and documentation for P&C systems, including:
- Key single line diagrams
- Three line diagrams
- AC/DC schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Panel layouts
- Multicore and LAN/FO cable interface drawings
- Cable and termination schedules
- SCADA and communications architecture drawings
- Bills of materials
- Interpret engineering sketches and mark-ups to produce accurate P&C CAD drawings.
- Collaborate with engineers and project teams to ensure design accuracy and consistency.
- Manage drawing revisions and document control in line with project procedures.
- Maintain CAD standards and adhere to company and client standards.
- Contribute to the development of standardised P&C drawing templates and component libraries.
- Collaborate across disciplines, including civil, structural and primary plant teams, to deliver fully integrated solutions.
- Maintain project files and organise databases.
- Assist with QA/QC by checking drawings for errors or inconsistencies.
- Carry out occasional site visits to assess constructability and support smooth project delivery.
- Contribute to identifying and managing health and safety risks in compliance with the CDM Regulations.
Digital delivery and BIM (development opportunity, project-dependent)
- Where projects require it, support the coordination of P&C design information within wider multidisciplinary BIM and digital-delivery workflows.
- Work with BIM and digital-delivery colleagues to improve the integration of secondary design information within coordinated substation models.
- Contribute to the development of digital-delivery processes for P&C design.
The Skills
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years’ experience in CAD drafting for substation protection and control design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical (or equivalent CAD software).
- Understanding of electrical P&C concepts (relays, CTs, VTs/CVTs, circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches and SCADA).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with relevant standards and specifications, e.g. IEC 61850, ENA Technical Specifications, and National Grid or DNO specifications.
- Experience on renewable energy projects such as BESS and offshore wind.
- Experience using Revit or other BIM authoring and coordination tools.
- Understanding of BIM processes and information-management principles on multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- An interest in developing broader BIM and digital-delivery capability alongside specialist P&C CAD expertise.
Why Join Us?
- Work on substation projects from 33kV to 400kV in the UK and internationally, including grid connections, BESS and renewable energy schemes.
- Develop your career as a P&C specialist, with the option to build BIM and digital-delivery skills.
- Be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Enjoy flexible working arrangements and professional development opportunities.
- Play a vital role in supporting the energy transition and net-zero ambitions.
