About the role
Job Description
As Project Financial Controller, you will be the finance partner to project teams, providing clear commercial insight and robust financial control across a portfolio of projects. You will own the integrity of project financial reporting, challenge performance and help project leaders make evidence-based decisions that protect margin, cash and delivery outcomes.
Key responsibilities:
- Produce accurate and timely monthly project reporting, including cost-to-complete forecasts and Estimate at Completion (EAC)
- Ensure revenue is recognised in line with policy, including percentage-of-completion and milestone-based methods, with a clear audit trail
- Identify margin deterioration early through variance analysis, trend review and constructive challenge during monthly project reviews
- Raise billing milestones on time, monitor working capital and minimise unbilled balances
- Ensure project variations are captured, priced and approved before work proceeds
- Maintain project risk and opportunity registers, ensuring contingency is supported and drawdown is transparent
Support budgeting and forecasting cycles with realistic, evidence-based project positions
You will be a commercially minded finance professional who combines strong financial control with the confidence to influence project teams.
Analytical and detail-focused, you can translate complex project data into clear insight, challenge assumptions constructively and maintain high standards in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong commercial judgement and a proactive approach to identifying financial risk and opportunity
- Clear and credible communicator, able to build effective relationships with finance and non-finance stakeholders
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate work to monthly deadlines
- Confident in providing constructive challenge and taking ownership through to resolution
- Collaborative, curious and committed to continuous improvement
Qualifications
- Proven experience in project financial control, project accounting or commercial finance within a project-led environment
- Strong understanding of project lifecycle financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cost-to-complete and EAC
- Practical knowledge of revenue recognition, including percentage-of-completion and milestone-based accounting
- Experience of margin and variance analysis, billing, unbilled revenue, working capital, change control and project risk management
- Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with finance, ERP and project reporting systems
- Experience partnering with project managers and senior stakeholders to improve financial performance and decision-making
- A recognised accounting qualification, or active progress towards one, is desirable; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered
- Experience in engineering, consultancy, infrastructure, construction or another complex project-based sector is advantageous
