About the role
About Airwallex
Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,700 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
About the team
The Product team at Airwallex is a group of passionate builders and problem-solvers obsessed with crafting customer-centric solutions that empower businesses to operate anywhere, anytime. We combine deep technical expertise with a clear understanding of customer needs to design and build unified, intuitive, and scalable financial infrastructure.
As part of our Embedded Finance and Platform APIs offering, the Issuing team builds the core infrastructure that enables global businesses, platforms, and marketplaces to create and manage multi-currency physical and virtual cards at scale via API. From programmatic spending controls and real-time remote authorization to multi-currency settlement and white-label card propositions, our team turns complex card scheme mechanics and global regulatory frameworks into simple, high-impact developer experiences.
What you’ll do
This strategic leadership role gives you full ownership of Airwallex’s Card Issuing product strategy, architecture, and roadmap. You will lead the vision for our global card issuance platform—spanning virtual and physical cards, digital wallet provisioning (Apple Pay, Google Pay), spend controls, fraud prevention, and real-time transaction processing directly tied to our multi-currency wallet.
As Product Director, you will bridge card networks (e.g., Visa), banking partners, core platform services, and commercial teams. You will manage and mentor a high-performing team of Product Managers, act as the company-wide subject matter expert on card issuance and embedded finance, and champion rapid iteration to scale card programs across 60+ countries and 170+ currencies.

Responsibilities
Strategy & Vision: Define and own Airwallex’s end-to-end Card Issuing product strategy, solution design, technical roadmap, and go-to-market execution across enterprise platforms, marketplaces, and corporate spend use cases.
Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of Product Managers, fostering a culture of customer obsession, technical rigor, and fast execution.
Core Product Capabilities: Drive innovation across key issuing surfaces, including:
Programmatic card creation (virtual, single-use, multi-use, and physical cards).
Real-time transaction processing, Remote Authorisation engines, and dynamic spend rules (limits, merchant category codes, currency restrictions).
Wallet integrations, 3D Secure authentication, digital card provisioning (Apple Pay/Google Pay), and Level 1 PCI-DSS tokenization/PAN delegation.
Cross-Functional Execution: Partner closely with Engineering, Architecture, and Design to build developer-first APIs, webhooks, and embedded SDKs/iframes that deliver frictionless onboarding and integration experiences.
Ecosystem & Scheme Partnerships: Collaborate with Scheme Management (Visa), BIN sponsors, card manufacturers, and Banking/Financial Partnership teams to expand global issuing coverage and optimize interchange and fee structures.
Commercial & Regulatory Alignment: Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Commercial teams to navigate regional licensing, cross-border payments regulations, and anti-fraud protocols without sacrificing developer velocity or user experience.
Balancing Trade-offs: Make data-backed trade-offs between long-term platform scalability, developer ergonomics, and near-term commercial priorities across diverse customer segments (e.g., OTAs, gig platforms, fintechs).
Metric Ownership: Own card transaction volume, interchange yield, API reliability/latency, activation rates, and program unit economics to drive sustainable product growth.
Who you are
Experience: 10+ years of professional experience in Product Management, Technical Product Management, or Software Engineering, with demonstrated experience in Card Issuing, Payment Processing, or Embedded Finance.
Domain Knowledge: Deep understanding of card issuing architecture: card schemes (Visa/Mastercard), BIN sponsorships, card production/fulfillment, transaction authorization/clearing/settlement loops, 3D Secure, tokenization, and PCI-DSS compliance.
Technical & API Fluency: Proven track record building and scaling developer-facing products (RESTful APIs, webhooks, SDKs) and working closely with engineers on distributed, high-availability transaction systems.
Cross-Functional & Commercial Acumen: Strong commercial mindset with experience modeling interchange/card economics, navigating global regulatory environments, and partnering with enterprise commercial teams.
Leadership & Influence: Outstanding communication skills, with an ability to distill complex scheme mechanics into clear strategies for both executive leadership and technical teams.
Analytical Problem Solver: Data-driven mindset with first-principles problem-solving skills, able to break down ambiguous business needs into executable technical roadmaps.
Ownership & Drive: Grit, ownership, and adaptability to lead teams and deliver high-impact launches in a fast-paced, multi-cultural, and distributed scale-up environment.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
