About pro-beam
pro-beam is an international technology company specializing in electron beam welding and advanced manufacturing equipment. For more than 50 years, pro-beam has developed sophisticated industrial machinery and manufacturing solutions for demanding applications across aerospace, defense, automotive, energy, and other advanced industries.
Our U.S. operation in Lombard, Illinois serves as a hub for equipment service, installation, commissioning, customer support, and manufacturing activities throughout North America.
As we continue expanding our U.S. operations, we are looking for an experienced Senior Field Service Engineer with a strong background in hands-on industrial machinery troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning.
You do not need previous electron beam experience. We are particularly interested in engineers who have serviced complex industrial equipment such as laser cutting or welding machines, CNC machine tools, advanced manufacturing equipment, and other sophisticated electromechanical machinery.
Comprehensive training on pro-beam's specialized electron beam technology will be provided, including collaboration with our technical teams in Germany.
What You'll Do
This is a hands-on technical service position supporting sophisticated industrial machinery at customer sites throughout North America and at our U.S. facility in Lombard, Illinois.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex industrial machinery at customer locations.
- Independently diagnose electrical, mechanical, and control-related machine failures and identify effective corrective actions.
- Troubleshoot components such as motors, drives, sensors, electrical circuits, safety systems, machine controls, and industrial communication networks.
- Perform hands-on mechanical repairs, component replacements, adjustments, and equipment testing.
- Support new machine installations, start-up procedures, functional testing, and customer acceptance.
- Conduct preventive maintenance, equipment upgrades, and technical service interventions.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering and service specialists in Germany on complex technical issues.
- Provide technical support and training to customers and other service personnel.
- Document service findings, repairs, and technical recommendations.
- Support service and equipment activities at the Lombard facility as needed.
- Participate in technical training in Germany to develop expertise in electron beam, vacuum, and high-voltage technology.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer who enjoys working directly on industrial machinery and takes ownership of diagnosing and resolving complex equipment problems.
Required Qualifications
- Several years of hands-on field service experience with complex industrial machinery or capital equipment.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Experience installing, commissioning, servicing, or repairing industrial equipment.
- Ability to independently diagnose machine failures and perform hands-on corrective work.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with PLC-controlled machinery, industrial drives, motors, sensors, and machine safety systems.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills and a methodical troubleshooting approach.
- Ability to work independently at customer locations and collaborate with engineering teams when necessary.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50–80% across North America and internationally for training.
- Valid driver's license.
Particularly Relevant Experience
We welcome applicants with experience in:
- Industrial laser cutting and welding machinery
- CNC machine tools and multi-axis manufacturing equipment
- Industrial automation and sophisticated electromechanical machinery
- Additive manufacturing equipment
- Semiconductor manufacturing equipment
- High-voltage or vacuum-based industrial equipment
- Other advanced industrial capital equipment
Experience with Siemens S7, TIA Portal, industrial motion controls, high-voltage equipment, vacuum technology, or electron beam equipment is advantageous but not required.
Important: This position focuses on the physical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial machinery. It is not a software development, IT support, or primarily PLC programming role.
Location & Travel
Our U.S. technical and manufacturing hub is located in Lombard, Illinois, in the Greater Chicago area.
Candidates based in the Greater Chicago area are strongly preferred, as the position includes periodic technical and operational activities at our Lombard facility in addition to customer-site travel.
We also welcome qualified applicants based elsewhere in Illinois and throughout the Midwest who can regularly support the Lombard location.
For candidates with particularly relevant technical experience, other U.S. locations may be considered.
The position involves approximately 50–80% travel, primarily throughout North America, with occasional international travel for training and technical collaboration.
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly compensation based on qualifications and experience
- Overtime eligibility
- Comprehensive technical training, including training in Germany
- Opportunity to develop expertise in highly specialized electron beam technology
- Significant independence and responsibility in a senior technical position
- Close collaboration with experienced international engineering teams
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- Opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of pro-beam's U.S. operations
Interested?
If you have built your career installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex industrial machinery and are interested in expanding your expertise into a highly specialized manufacturing technology, we would welcome your application.
Direct electron beam experience is not required. Your hands-on machinery experience, technical troubleshooting abilities, and willingness to learn are what matter most.
