About the role
At Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA), we are committed to delivering world-class automotive technologies that push the boundaries of what is possible. Our teams of highly skilled engineers and designers use cutting-edge software and technology, to enhance the driving experience and reduce environmental impact.
Position Overview
This is a unique opportunity for pre-law students to immerse themselves in the Mercedes-Benz Research and Development legal department, where automotive innovation meets complex technology legal issues.
We strongly prefer candidates who are considering law school.
Job Responsibilities:
Students will work with attorneys on a variety of topics, including but not limited to emerging technologies, intellectual property, regulatory enforcement, open source, data privacy, AI, employment law, litigation, and commercial contracts.
Projects include conducting research, drafting memos, preparing presentations and summaries, and participating in discussions and interfacing with business and engineering teams on emerging legal issues.
The ideal candidate possesses the following characteristics: passionate about technology, thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving real-world problems, eager to learn, able to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of professionals (engineers, business professionals, and lawyers), and tech-savvy with the ability to quickly learn new tools and applications.
Eligibility. This is an unpaid internship where academic credit is required and must be obtained through your school's internship program. A minimum of 20 hours per week is required (flexible schedule to accommodate student classes) onsite at our Silicon Valley or Ann Arbor office. To ensure a valuable internship experience, students whose schools operate on the quarter system must commit to two academic quarters.
Balancing the responsibilities of this internship with a full-time academic schedule requires strong time management, organization, and accountability. Interns must be proactive in planning around classes, assignments, exams, and other academic commitments while consistently meeting the internship's minimum 20-hour weekly requirement. Staying organized, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining a structured schedule are essential to ensuring that neither academic nor professional responsibilities are compromised.
Communication is equally important. Interns should maintain consistent and transparent communication with their supervising attorneys and team members regarding availability, workload, deadlines, and any scheduling conflicts. Being proactive about providing updates, asking questions, communicating challenges early, and following through on commitments helps build trust and ensures that projects continue moving forward. Ultimately, success in this role requires balancing academic and professional priorities while demonstrating reliability, flexibility, and professionalism.
