Directorate/Division Summary:
Maintaining and protecting the safety and health of BNL employees, the public, and the environment is a core mission of Safety and Health Services. The Industrial Hygiene group supports Laboratory operations by performing workplace hazard evaluations, exposure monitoring, and technical assessments for chemical, physical, and ergonomic hazards. The group works with operations, research, engineering, and safety personnel to help identify hazards and support appropriate exposure controls.
Position Description:
Reporting to the Industrial Hygiene Program Supervisor in the Safety and Health Services Division, the Industrial Hygiene Engineer will perform routine to moderately complex Industrial Hygiene assignments in support of Brookhaven National Laboratory's Industrial Hygiene Program. The position requires the use of established Industrial Hygiene principles and practices to evaluate workplace exposures, perform field surveys, support PPE and respiratory protection activities, and document hazard assessments. This position will also hold subject matter expert (SME) roles and therefore be the primary contact for laboratory staff related to that role.
The Industrial Hygiene Engineer will work with a level of independence appropriate for an intermediate-level engineer. Assigned work will be performed using sound professional judgment, while unusual, highly complex, or programmatic issues will receive guidance from the Industrial Hygiene Program Supervisor or senior Industrial Hygiene staff. Work products will be reviewed for technical accuracy, completeness, and alignment with Laboratory requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with and conduct qualitative and quantitative Industrial Hygiene exposure assessments for chemical and physical workplace hazards.
- Perform workplace surveys, field inspections, exposure monitoring, and hazard evaluations in laboratories, shops, experimental facilities, support areas, and other operational environments.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, exposure monitoring summaries, hazard evaluations, and written recommendations for review by senior Industrial Hygiene staff or the Industrial Hygiene Program Supervisor.
- Support Respiratory Protection and PPE program activities, including task-based hazard assessments, respirator selection support, PPE evaluations, fit testing support, documentation, and employee guidance.
- Assist with evaluating workplace controls, including engineering controls, administrative controls, local exhaust ventilation systems, respiratory protection equipment, and personal protective equipment.
- Conduct and assist with ergonomics assessments, including evaluations of workstation setup, task design, material handling, repetitive motion concerns, and related employee exposure concerns.
- Conduct and assist with exhaust ventilation evaluations, including basic airflow measurements, smoke testing, capture observations, visual inspections, and documentation of system performance concerns.
- Collect Industrial Hygiene samples, operate monitoring equipment, document sampling activities, maintain chain-of-custody records, and coordinate sample submission to analytical laboratories.
- Review field measurements, sampling data, and laboratory analytical results to support exposure assessments and hazard evaluations.
- Compare exposure monitoring results to applicable occupational exposure limits, guidance values, and Laboratory requirements under the direction of senior Industrial Hygiene staff.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshooting Industrial Hygiene monitoring and sampling equipment.
- Support chemical activities by assisting with chemical hazard reviews, workplace evaluations, and control recommendations.
- Assist with maintaining Industrial Hygiene records, procedures, equipment inventories, sampling documentation, and program files.
- Collaborate with line organizations, scientists, engineers, technicians, craft workers, safety professionals, and management to support hazard identification and exposure control activities.
- Serve as a technical resource and/or subject matter expert, as assigned and commensurate with experience, in Industrial Hygiene areas potentially including PPE selection and evaluation, respiratory protection, respirator fit testing, ergonomics, exhaust ventilation, occupational noise, chemical exposure monitoring, and related workplace assessment activities.
- Support occupational health activities, Industrial Hygiene-related incident reviews, and emergency response support activities as assigned.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable OSHA, DOE, ACGIH, and Laboratory occupational health and safety requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Occupational Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Physical Sciences, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health, environmental health and safety, engineering, or a related scientific or technical field. Relevant experience must include assessing workplace health hazards, conduct exposure monitoring, or evaluating protective measures and controls, along with analyzing and documenting technical findings.
