You will work with RETTEW's HSE team to assist with program documentation, data tracking, training support, workplace observations, and other assignments that strengthen safe and environmentally responsible work practices.
This role is designed for a student pursuing Occupational Safety and Health or a closely related field who is ready to apply classroom knowledge in a professional consulting environment. Prior professional HSE experience is not required. Curiosity, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are essential.
What You'll Do
- Support HSE team members with day-to-day program activities, documentation, research, and project assignments.
- Assist with reviewing, organizing, and maintaining safety and environmental policies, procedures, forms, records, and training materials.
- Help track safety observations, training completion, corrective actions, inspections, and other HSE information using established systems and tools.
- Support the preparation of reports, summaries, presentations, communications, and educational materials for employees and project teams.
- Assist with planning and coordinating safety meetings, training sessions, awareness campaigns, and related employee engagement activities.
- Participate in supervised office, facility, and project-site observations to learn how hazards are identified, evaluated, communicated, and addressed.
- Document observations and follow-up items accurately and promptly under the direction of HSE professionals.
- Conduct basic research on occupational safety, environmental requirements, industry practices, and emerging HSE topics.
- Collaborate with employees across disciplines and communicate respectfully with technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Ask questions, seek feedback, and take increasing ownership of assignments as your knowledge and confidence grow.
What You'll Bring
Required qualifications
- Current enrollment in an accredited bachelor's degree program in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
- Interest in workplace health and safety, environmental compliance, risk reduction, employee education, or safety program management.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn additional systems used by the team.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, written communication, and follow-through.
- Ability to handle workplace information professionally and maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team while completing individual assignments responsibly.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week from May 31 through August 27, 2027.
- Ability to safely participate in supervised field and facility visits, use required personal protective equipment, and travel approximately once per week as assignments require.
Preferred qualifications
- Coursework in occupational safety, environmental health, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, risk management, environmental compliance, or related subjects.
- Exposure to OSHA concepts, hazard recognition, incident prevention, safety training, environmental requirements, or data analysis through coursework, projects, employment, or volunteer activities.
- Experience creating clear written materials, presentations, spreadsheets, or data summaries.
- A valid driver's license and reliable ability to travel to local RETTEW or project locations when needed.
What You'll Gain
- Practical experience supporting health, safety, and environmental programs in an engineering consulting environment.
- Coaching and feedback from HSE team members and exposure to professionals across RETTEW's technical practices.
- A working understanding of how HSE requirements are translated into everyday procedures, training, documentation, and field practices.
- Experience balancing independent assignments with collaboration across a multidisciplinary team.
- A clearer understanding of potential career paths in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, and HSE consulting.
