Who We Are
The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
Our Culture
We embrace a culture of learning, collaboration, innovation, and well-being, where open communication drives our impact.
About The Role
The Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health is seeking a Gender Affirming Care Access Hub Navigator to work under the direction of the Deputy Director of the Abortion Access Hub to connect callers and chatters to gender affirming care in NYC by making referrals to medical providers and service providers. The successful candidate will have experience working in these settings, have relationships with organizations and youth-serving professionals and display self-motivation, accuracy, efficiency, empathy, and intellectual curiosity.
About the Program
Gender-affirming care (GAC) is recognized by major U.S. medical associations as medically necessary for many transgender and gender-diverse people. In addition, many transgender and gender non-conforming/non-binary (TGNCNB) individuals also need legal or practical assistance in updating their identification documents, combatting jobs or housing discrimination, or even accessing education or bathrooms. Research shows GAC is associated with reduced depression and suicidal ideation, and better long-term mental health outcomes. Denial of care or legal recognition of one’s identity increases risk of mental health crisis and unsafe self-treatment. Yet access has become increasingly difficult due to state-level restrictions, insurance barriers, and shifting federal guidance.
The combination of federal and state legal pressures, coupled with social stigma, creates tangible and psychological barriers to care and civil equality. Policymakers, especially at the local level, have a critical role in safeguarding these essential services and protecting the rights of transgender and gender-diverse people.
New York has been an innovator and leader in sexual and reproductive health. Both our city and state government officials have been proactive in creating protections for not only abortion but also gender affirming communities and health care. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) has long followed the tenets of the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Framework which states that all people should have the power and resources to make healthy decisions about their bodies, including sexuality and reproduction.
As part of these efforts, the Health Department will develop and implement a navigation Hub to connect callers and chatters to information, services and gender-affirming care in New York City.
