Every ambitious mission needs a financial leader who can see what is possible—and build the foundation to sustain it.
The North Carolina Justice Center seeks a Finance Director to bring strategic insight, disciplined stewardship, and sound judgment to an organization committed to social, racial, and economic justice. This is an opportunity to help shape the decisions, systems, and investments that make consequential work possible.
The Finance Director will report to our new Executive Director who has a vision for organizational growth and impact. You will serve on the Management Team, lead NCJC’s financial operations, advise leadership and the Board, and guide the allocation of organizational resources responsible. You will supervise the Accounting Manager and Accountant, developing a finance team that delivers accurate information, responsive partnership, and clear accountability.
Your leadership will shape what comes next.
You will connect financial strategy with organizational priorities, helping NCJC anticipate challenges, evaluate opportunities, and plan confidently for the future. Your responsibilities will include:
- Set financial direction. Lead budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning; partner with leadership on funding strategy and revenue diversification.
- Protect organizational resources. Manage cash flow, investments, financial risk, and oversight of the NCJC endowment.
- Make complex information useful. Translate financial results into clear reports and actionable guidance for the Executive Director, Board, managers, and staff.
- Ensure rigorous stewardship. Oversee accounting, audits, financial reporting, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant and contract requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Strengthen the financial foundation. Improve internal controls, financial systems, and accountability practices while supporting managers in thoughtful spending decisions.
- Develop people and partnerships. Support the growth of the finance team and build productive relationships across the organization.
Bring the expertise. Exercise the judgment. Share the commitment.
We are seeking a financial executive with experience in building systems that take advantage of modern technology. Your technical depth will be combined with the ability to lead, communicate, and influence at the organizational level. You should be comfortable navigating complex budgets and restricted funding, assessing risk, and helping colleagues understand the financial implications of their decisions.
Minimum qualifications include:
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
- Ten years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least five years in senior leadership or executive-level management.
- Experience in nonprofit finance and grants management.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets and restricted funding environments.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and federal and foundation grant compliance.
- Experience overseeing audits and internal controls, managing and developing staff, and using financial systems and reporting tools such as Blackbaud.
A MBA or CPA designation is preferred.
Your approach to leadership matters here. We value strategic thinking, sound judgment, respect for diverse perspectives, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusive practices and equitable decision-making.
The setting
This hybrid position is based in Raleigh and requires occasional statewide travel. Some evening and weekend participation in meetings or events may be necessary. The work is collaborative and fast paced, requiring discretion, adaptability, and professionalism.
NCJC provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities to enable them to perform the essential functions of the position.
Bring your financial leadership to work that matters.
