Impact and Contributions: This role sits within the Document Retention & Archiving (DRA) Crew in COO Transformation Technology, where our squads design, build and operate secure, scalable and resilient content platforms for the enterprise. You will help shape the future of our cloud-first platforms and services, ensuring they meet business needs while aligning with modern engineering principles, secure-by-design practices and operational excellence standards.
As a hands-on people leader, you will lead the Software Engineering Chapter and work across DRA squads and crews to build shared capability, guide technical direction and enable consistent engineering outcomes. You will partner with Product Owners, Staff Engineers, architects and other chapter leads to strengthen delivery, platform evolution and run excellence across DRA.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a strong risk mindset by proactively identifying, discussing and acting on current and emerging engineering, operational, security and compliance risks.
- Build, lead and inspire an inclusive, engaged team of engineers, setting clear expectations and creating an environment of psychological safety, constructive challenge and accountability.
- Coach and develop engineers through regular feedback, career planning, mentoring and succession development, while raising engineering capability across the chapter and broader practice.
- Translate business and technology strategy into an executable engineering roadmap, quarterly priorities and a well-managed backlog.
- Provide technical leadership across squads and influence architecture, design and engineering outcomes without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
- Establish consistent engineering standards, reusable platform patterns, automation frameworks and guardrails aligned with enterprise practices.
- Champion cloud-native, platform engineering and secure-by-design practices across software delivery and operations.
- Build a best-in-class run capability, with clear ownership of reliability, resilience, observability, incident learning, disaster recovery and continuous improvement.
- Partner effectively with product, architecture, cyber security, risk and operations stakeholders to manage complex dependencies and deliver sustainable outcomes.
- Promote engineering productivity through CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, automated testing and self-service capabilities.
- Balance customer outcomes, delivery pace, technical debt, operational risk, sustainability and cloud cost when making investment decisions.
- Guide the responsible evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled solutions and intelligent automation.
Requirement-
We use a broad range of tools, languages and frameworks. You do not need to be the deepest specialist in every technology; however, you will need sufficient breadth and depth to set direction, challenge designs, manage technical risk and coach engineers across the following areas:
- Engineering leadership: Significant enterprise software engineering experience, including a proven record of leading high-performing teams and influencing outcomes across multiple squads.
- Software engineering: Strong working knowledge of modern application development using C#/.NET, Java/J2EE with Spring Boot, Python or comparable languages, together with design patterns, secure coding and automated testing strategies.
- APIs and integration: Experience governing API design and lifecycle practices, including OpenAPI, REST and SOAP, microservices, event-driven architectures and integration technologies such as Kafka, MQ, Apache Camel, Temporal or MuleSoft.
- Cloud architecture: Strong experience leading cloud migration and modernisation, with depth in AWS, networking, identity, load balancing, storage, compute, managed databases and highly available architecture patterns.
- Kubernetes and platform engineering: Practical understanding of Kubernetes and managed platforms such as EKS or AKS, containerised workloads, Helm, ingress, networking, reusable platform patterns and self-service engineering capabilities.
- DevSecOps and automation: Experience establishing CI/CD, GitOps and Infrastructure as Code practices using technologies such as GitHub Actions, Argo CD, CloudFormation or equivalent tooling, with appropriate software supply-chain controls.
- Reliability and operations: Demonstrated leadership in observability, monitoring, alerting, incident management, reliability engineering, resilience, disaster recovery and business continuity for mission-critical services.
- Security and risk: Strong knowledge of defence in depth, secure-by-design approaches, IAM, encryption, secrets management, public cloud obligations, compliance controls and engineering governance.
- Data platforms: Understanding of relational and NoSQL technologies such as PostgreSQL, Oracle and MongoDB, plus data architecture, integration, real-time processing and scalable API-based data services.
- Cost and performance: Ability to guide cloud cost optimisation, capacity and performance decisions using FinOps practices and tools such as Apptio Cloudability or equivalents.
- AI and emerging technology: Awareness of AI-enabled solutions, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, agent-based workflows and machine learning integration, with the judgement to assess value, risk and operational readiness.
- Communication and delivery: Excellent stakeholder communication, architectural decision-making and experience working with Agile delivery methods in complex enterprise environments.
