About the role
Tampa General Hospital is seeking a Clinical Health Psychologist with expertise in digestive diseases to serve as Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Digestive Disease Institute (DDI). This position is divided equally between leadership responsibilities (0.5 FTE) and direct clinical care (0.5 FTE). The Director of Behavioral Medicine will guide all psychology patient care across the DDI service line, with three primary objectives: program development, strategic expansion, and operational excellence.
The Director will develop and implement evidence-based behavioral health services for patients with complex digestive conditions and those pursuing bariatric or gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. Combining clinical expertise, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the Director will advance care that addresses the biopsychosocial aspects of digestive health and supports the mission and values of the Institute and organization.
Patients commonly referred to GI psychology include those with inflammatory bowel diseases, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease; celiac disease; disorders of gut-brain interaction, including irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal pain, rumination, and functional dyspepsia; constipation and encopresis; short bowel syndrome; esophageal disorders; and other complex digestive health needs.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development
- Design, implement, and evaluate integrated behavioral medicine programs tailored to digestive disease and bariatric/GI surgery populations.
- Establish evidence-based assessment and treatment pathways, referral criteria, and standards of care that promote consistent, coordinated psychology services.
Collaborate with gastroenterology, bariatric and GI surgery, nursing, nutrition, and other disciplines to integrate psychology throughout the patient care journey.
Operations and Administrative Leadership
- Oversee psychology service delivery, productivity, staffing, scheduling, clinical workflows, program performance and administrative processes across DDI.
- Direct quality improvement initiatives and use patient outcomes, experience, and operational data to guide service improvements and maintain organizational standards.
Clinical Care Training and Research
- Provide psychological assessment, consultation, and evidence-based treatment for patients with digestive diseases, addressing symptom management, adjustment, coping, and treatment adherence.
- Provide preoperative psychological evaluations and perioperative behavioral care for patients pursuing bariatric or GI surgery, in collaboration with surgical teams. Provide education, training, and clinical supervision for psychology trainees and interdisciplinary colleagues.
- Lead and collaborate on clinical research, outcomes evaluation, and scholarly initiatives that advance behavioral medicine in digestive health.
