The Senior Director of Creative
Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Creative is the creative leader of HMG’s internal agency. This role owns the full creative process: capturing content in the field and in the studio, developing it, and producing finished assets across audio, video, written content, graphic design, and photography. The team takes briefs from Senior Leadership, Product Directors, Marketing, and Donor Engagement and delivers finished work for distribution. This leader directs three Director-level leaders and two studios, in Franklin, TN and Houston, TX. The goal is one creative team with one standard of quality, so every brand receives the same craft regardless of which studio makes the work. The Senior Director owns the quality of the output and the health of the pipeline that produces it. The Director of Creative Operations owns the operational infrastructure: intake, capacity, and workflow. Together they make sure the right work reaches the right people at the right time and that the work itself is excellent.
Essential Functions
Team Leadership:
- Lead, coach, and hold accountable three Director-level leaders, setting clear goals for each and developing them as future senior leaders.
- Lead and develop the team’s production team: audio producers, video producers, writers, and graphic designers.
- Ensure work is assigned to the right creative talent based on format, tone, and brand fit.
- Recruit and grow creative talent as the team expands
- Create a culture of creative excellence inside the team - high standards, constructive feedback, and continuous improvement
- Train the creative team on approved AI practices and review work to confirm it meets brand, quality, and ministry standards
Leading Two Studios:
- Lead the Houston and Nashville studios as one team with shared standards, workflows, and tools
- Assign work and resources across both locations based on capacity and fit, regardless of which brand or market made the request
- Oversee studio facilities, equipment, and technical readiness at both sites
- Plan equipment and facility investments and make the case for them
Creative Leadership and Quality:
- Set and maintain the creative standard for all creative team output: audio, video, written content, graphic design, and photography
- Review and approve creative work before it shared with the client, such as the Product Director, Marketing, VP of Brand or Chief of Donor Engagement, for final sign-off
- Ensure every asset produced by the team is consistent with HMG brand standards as defined by the VP of Brand
- Raise the creative quality of the organization over time and push what HMG content looks and sounds like
Leading the Creative Process: Capture, Creation, and Production:
- Own the end-to-end flow from brief to finished asset, including capture, creative development, and production
- Build a capture-first culture where every live event, on-air moment, and ministry touchpoint is treated as a content opportunity, and the team is deployed to get it
- Define the standards and handoffs between capture, creation, and production so work moves cleanly through each stage
- Partner with Live Experiences and Promotions to deploy capture resources at every event
- Work with talent to turn live and on-air moments into short-form and cross-platform content
- Confirm that music, talent, and usage rights are documented before finished assets are handed off for distribution
Brief Intake and Creative Development:
- Partner with the Director of Creative Operations and the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications on the shared Wrike intake process, where marketing owns the front door and this role assesses briefs creatively
- Translate briefs from Product Directors and Marketing into creative directions the team can execute
- Lead concepting and creative development for major campaigns, content series, and brand moments
- Know when a brief needs more creative development before it goes into production and push back constructively when it does
Cross-Brand Creative Consistency:
- Work closely with the VP of Brand to ensure creative team output reflects and reinforces HMG's brand architecture
- Understand the distinct voice, tone, and creative identity of each brand - KSBJ sounds different from Vida Unida, which sounds different from Hope Events - and ensure the team honors those distinctions in every asset
- Serve as the creative point of contact for Product Directors on how their brand should be expressed across formats
Format, Craft, and AI:
- Build the team’s capability across formats over time: podcast production, video, written content standards, graphic design
- Stay current on how audiences consume content across platforms and bring that knowledge into the team’s creative approach
- Participate with the VP of Strategy & Innovation to identify new creative format opportunities HMG is not yet using and bring proposals to the table
- Use AI in creative production within the guidelines set by the VP of Brand, and bring questions or proposed changes to those guidelines to the VP of Brand
Budget Management:
- Develop department or functional area budget annually and provide FP&A monthly input to accurately forecast costs and revenue
- Review expenses/invoices using the Ramp platform as they are submitted, ensuring proper coding by department, project, brand and location, and that all departmental spend follows HMG credit card, travel and company policies
