About the role
Job Description Summary
The Managing Director - Healthcare Delivery Transformation will lead a newly established, portfolio-level capability within Novartis U.S. Commercial focused on removing structural friction across the healthcare ecosystem and redesigning how care is organized and delivered in complex disease markets. The role will identify where existing care pathways, provider workflows, sites of care, stakeholder roles, or delivery infrastructure are insufficient, then design, test, and scale new healthcare-delivery models that enable optimal patient care and maximize the potential of the Novartis pipeline. The capability will initially focus on cardiovascular use cases and expand to additional disease areas, with Immunology as the next focus area. Cardiovascular will serve as the proving ground for approaches that can be adapted across therapeutic areas while reflecting the distinct clinical pathways, treatment modalities, stakeholders, channels, and care settings of each disease market.
Within Cardiovascular, Proactive Heart Health and Early Intervention will operate as a synergistic, CV-specific pillar alongside healthcare-delivery transformation for long-acting injectable therapies. This work responds to low urgency in an asymptomatic disease, persistent adherence challenges with standard of care, and the large proportion of patients who remain above recommended treatment goals. Efforts will initially focus on employer activation, focused consumer activation, and system re-wiring to elevate proactive heart health, connected to ongoing policy work led by Public Affairs. These activities will be developed in collaboration with other functions, including Marketing, Medical Affairs, Market Access and Patient Support, Public Affairs, etc.
The enterprise capability being built is healthcare delivery transformation. It will establish scalable operating models, ecosystem partnerships, and stage-gated pilots that address cross-cutting delivery barriers and determine when incremental improvement is insufficient and broader disease-market restructuring is required. For Direct to Patient (DTP) models, the role will complement Marketing's leadership of the foundational consumer experience and enablers by defining and testing the care-delivery changes needed when DTP alters how patients enter, navigate, or receive care.
The role will operate through clear partnership and decision rights. Therapeutic-area, GM and IPST teams retain accountability for disease, portfolio, and product strategies. Partnering functions, such as Marketing, Medical Affairs, Market Access and Patient Support, Public Affairs, etc. retain their established accountabilities. This role is accountable for the healthcare-delivery architecture: identifying delivery problems, aligning stakeholders on the model to be tested, orchestrating execution, and generating recommendations to scale, adapt, transfer, partner, invest, or stop.
This role is intentionally non-traditional for the pharmaceutical industry. Success requires fluency in healthcare delivery, reimbursement, commercialization, product and platform strategy, and operations, combined with an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to build new capabilities compliantly within a large, highly regulated organization. The leader will be a member of the U.S. Cardiometabolic General Management Leadership Team (CVM GMLT) and the CVM Therapeutic Alignment Forum (CVM TAAF), with accountability for assigned initiatives and broader enterprise leadership.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
· Enterprise healthcare-delivery capability and portfolio prioritization: Build a cohesive enterprise capability for healthcare-delivery transformation. Prioritize use cases based on patient and system need, pathway friction, pipeline relevance, feasibility, scalability, and evidence requirements. Begin with Cardiovascular, expand next to Immunology, and assess additional therapeutic areas where delivery complexity limits optimal care or pipeline potential.
· Disease-market restructuring and care-model innovation: Identify disease markets in which existing pathways, stakeholder roles, channels, sites of care, or infrastructure cannot support emerging treatment modalities or desired standards of care. Define the future-state delivery model, clarify how value and responsibility should shift across the ecosystem, and develop practical pathways for implementation.
· Healthcare-delivery model design: Architect and test configurable delivery models that address system-level barriers across referral pathways, diagnostic resolution, provider workflow, site-of-care readiness, treatment administration, logistics, care coordination, and follow-up infrastructure. Adapt models to the disease area, treatment modality, geography, payer mix, provider environment, channel, and maturity of the care setting.
· Cardiovascular pillar - Proactive Heart Health and Early Intervention: Lead the CV-specific pillar designed to create greater ecosystem urgency around proactive heart health and earlier action. In partnership with accountable functions, connect employer activation, focused consumer activation, health-system re-wiring, and Public Affairs-led policy efforts into a coherent approach that complements delivery transformation for long-acting injectable therapies. This pillar does not transfer ownership of brand strategy, promotional activation, public policy, or patient-support operations to this role.
· Direct to Patient care-delivery transformation: Partner with Marketing as it establishes DTP strategy and foundational consumer enablers, including content and websites. Determine where greater use of DTP requires redesign of the underlying care-delivery model, such as new connections among screening, diagnosis, prescribing, fulfillment, administration, sites of care, and clinical follow-up. Define and test the operating model and ecosystem handoffs without owning DTP marketing, communications, promotional execution, or product-specific support programs.
· External partnerships and ecosystem development: Source, structure, and manage partnerships established specifically to enable the healthcare-delivery capability, including relationships with health systems, care-delivery platforms, diagnostic organizations, technology companies, employers, community organizations, and other ecosystem participants. Where an existing relationship or capability resides in another function, partner with that accountable owner and establish explicit governance, decision rights, and handoffs.
· Technology, data, and AI enablement: Define the healthcare-delivery problem, user requirements, workflow needs, interoperability requirements, and intended outcomes for digital, analytics, and AI-enabled solutions. Partner with the appropriate Marketing, Patient Support, Precision Medicine, Decision Science, or technology owner for product development, deployment, and ongoing operations under appropriate privacy, security, medical, legal, regulatory, ethics, risk, and compliance governance.
· Evidence, learning, and stage-gated execution: Define pilot hypotheses, success criteria, implementation measures, and decision gates with other accountable functions. Use real-world learning to recommend whether an approach should be scaled, adapted, transferred to an operating owner, expanded through partnership or investment, or stopped. Medical Affairs retains accountability for evidence-generation activities.
· Economic and access architecture: Partner with Market Access to ensure healthcare-delivery models account for relevant reimbursement, benefit design, service-payment, affordability, and site-of-care dynamics. Market Access retains accountability for access strategy, payer strategy, pricing, contracting, and related execution.
· Cross-functional and enterprise leadership: Build and lead a lean, high-impact team and orchestrate matrixed resources across Marketing, Medical Affairs, Market Access and Patient Support, Precision Medicine, Public Affairs, Communications, Decision Science, Finance, Legal, Privacy, Security, Ethics, Risk and Compliance, and therapeutic-area teams. Align leaders on priorities, decision rights, resources, trade-offs, ownership of ongoing operations, and enterprise reuse.
· Governance, responsible innovation, and risk stewardship: Establish clear governance, stage gates, risk reviews, escalation mechanisms, and success criteria. Ensure healthcare-delivery models, external partnerships, technology, and disease-market interventions are designed and executed responsibly, ethically, transparently, and compliantly, with appropriate consideration of strategic, operational, financial, reputational, and compliance risk.
· Executive advisory and ecosystem shaping: Serve as a thought partner to senior U.S. leadership on healthcare-delivery transformation, disease-market restructuring, external ecosystem strategy, and long-term capability building. Bring an enterprise perspective while respecting the decision rights and accountabilities of therapeutic areas and established functions.
· Culture: Model the Novartis Behaviors in Action and Leadership Expectations while fostering an inclusive, high-performing, entrepreneurial environment that supports experimentation, learning, and disciplined execution.
Essential Requirements:
Education
· Bachelor's degree required; MBA, MPH, MHA, or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.
Required
· 10-15+ years of experience in healthcare delivery, healthcare services, private equity or venture capital investing in healthcare, health-system innovation, or adjacent entrepreneurial domains.
· Demonstrated experience building or scaling healthcare-delivery models, platforms, or services, such as infusion delivery, provider operations, specialty care models, care coordination, population health, or site-of-care infrastructure.
· Experience diagnosing system-level barriers and translating them into operating models, external partnerships, pilots, and scalable implementation approaches.
· Understanding of U.S. healthcare economics, reimbursement, medical-benefit and pharmacy-benefit dynamics, and site-of-care considerations.
· Ability to distinguish enterprise capability building from brand, marketing, access, medical, precision-medicine, patient-support, public-policy, and technology accountabilities and to operate effectively through shared decision rights.
· Proven ability to operate in high ambiguity, build from scratch, and drive results without an existing playbook.
· Experience building teams or leading in rapidly evolving environments, including establishing roles, governance, capabilities, and operating cadence.
· Strong executive presence and the ability to influence senior leaders, external partners, and governance bodies.
· Experience navigating highly regulated environments with sound judgment and demonstrated partnership with compliance and risk-management stakeholders.
· Proven ability to identify, assess, manage, and communicate strategic, operational, financial, reputational, and compliance risks and trade-offs.
Desirable Requirements:
· Real-world experience bringing complex, multi-party ecosystem partnerships to life.
· Experience with care models supporting specialty medicines, long-acting therapies, infusion or administration infrastructure, or emerging direct-to-patient channels.
· Entrepreneurial mindset with disciplined execution and a bias toward learning through pilots and data.
· Ability to balance strategic vision with operational pragmatism: disciplined at the core and flexible at the edges.
· Passion for improving patient outcomes at scale by reshaping how care is organized and delivered.
· Comfort engaging externally as a convener and internally as a builder.
