Why You Will Love this Job

The Role

As a Shift Generator Engineer, you will work on a 4 on, 4 off shift pattern and be based predominantly at our Walkden depot in Manchester.

This is primarily a depot-based position, where you will be responsible for servicing, maintaining, fault finding and repairing our fleet of diesel generators. You will work on generators returning from hire as well as preparing, testing and maintaining equipment ready for its next deployment.

You will play an important role in ensuring our generator fleet remains reliable, safe and available for our customers, completing everything from routine servicing and inspections through to more complex mechanical and electrical repairs.

Although the role is approximately 95% depot-based, there may occasionally be a requirement to provide engineering support at customer sites across the North West. A company van will be available when site attendance is required.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Generator Engineer looking for the stability of a predominantly depot-based position combined with a 4 on, 4 off working pattern.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out servicing, maintenance and repair of diesel generators ranging from smaller sets through to large multi-megawatt units.
  • Maintain and repair generators returning to the Walkden depot from customer hire.
  • Complete routine servicing and preventative maintenance to maximise generator reliability and availability.
  • Carry out thorough inspections on generators returning from hire and identify any repairs or remedial work required.
  • Prepare and inspect generators before they are deployed back to customer sites.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate tools, equipment and diagnostic software.
  • Complete mechanical and electrical repairs to a high standard.
  • Conduct load bank testing, functional checks and performance verification.
  • Work across engines, alternators, control panels and associated generator systems.
  • Prepare generators, distribution equipment and associated components for customer hire.
  • Maintain accurate service records, job sheets and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure all equipment meets Rehlko’s quality, safety and compliance standards before leaving the depot.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability and workshop processes.
  • Maintain high standards of workshop organisation, housekeeping and health and safety.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering and operations teams to ensure equipment is prepared and available when required.
  • Provide occasional engineering support at customer sites across the North West when required.

The Person

  • Proven experience working with diesel generators or similar mechanical and electrical plant.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience carrying out servicing, planned maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to confidently diagnose faults and identify the appropriate repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams and service manuals.
  • Experience with engine manufacturers such as Volvo, Scania, Perkins or MTU would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of control panels, alternators and generator control systems such as Deep Sea or ComAp would be desirable.
  • Strong understanding of workshop health and safety requirements.
  • A practical, hands-on approach to engineering and problem solving.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of the wider engineering team.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Willingness to work a 4 on, 4 off shift pattern.
  • Full UK driving licence preferred.

What We Can Offer You

  • Competitive salary/rate depending on experience
  • 4 on, 4 off shift pattern
  • Predominantly depot-based position
  • Overtime opportunities
  • 33 days holiday, including bank holidays, subject to shift entitlement
  • Training and upskilling opportunities
  • Private healthcare
  • Death in service benefit
  • Excellent long-term progression opportunities
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Programme
  • Opportunity to develop your technical knowledge within a global power generation business

If you’re an experienced Generator Engineer looking for a predominantly workshop-based role without the expectation of constantly travelling between customer sites, this is an excellent opportunity to join our engineering team at Walkden.
