About BEAR Technologies
BEAR Technologies is a growing managed services provider (MSP) delivering networking, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and IT solutions to businesses across the country.
We support a diverse range of small and mid-sized businesses, helping our customers build, maintain, and troubleshoot reliable technology environments. Our team values accountability, technical curiosity, collaboration, and delivering quality work the first time.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a hands-on Network Field Technician / Junior Network Engineer to join our Networking team.
This isn't a position where you'll spend every day sitting behind a desk monitoring dashboards. You'll spend significant time at customer locations installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining network infrastructure.
One day you might be installing switches and wireless access points at a new office. The next, you could be troubleshooting a VLAN issue, deploying security cameras, organizing a network rack, or assisting with a network upgrade at a customer site.
We're looking for someone with solid networking fundamentals, practical installation experience, and the ability to work independently while knowing when to involve senior engineers.
You don't need to be an expert in advanced routing protocols or enterprise network architecture. You do need to understand networking well enough to install it correctly, troubleshoot problems methodically, and explain what you're doing.
This position is based in Plano, Texas, requires regular in-office work when not in the field, and involves travel to customer locations throughout the United States.
What You'll Do
Network Installation & Field Work
- Install, replace, configure, and troubleshoot network switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Install and physically mount wireless access points, IP security cameras, and related network equipment.
- Run, terminate, test, and troubleshoot copper Ethernet cabling, including Cat5e and Cat6.
- Install and organize network racks, patch panels, cable management, and related infrastructure.
- Work safely on ladders and appropriate elevated work platforms when necessary.
- Stage and prepare equipment before deployment, ensuring configurations, firmware, and required accessories are ready.
- Test and validate installations before completing a project or leaving a customer site.
Network Configuration & Troubleshooting
- Configure and support Cisco Meraki networking equipment, including MX security appliances, MS switches, and MR wireless access points.
- Configure and troubleshoot VLANs, switch ports, trunk ports, IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, NAT, and basic routing.
- Understand network segmentation and how traffic moves between VLANs and subnets.
- Troubleshoot wired and wireless connectivity issues, including PoE, cabling faults, incorrect VLAN assignments, wireless coverage, and device connectivity.
- Assist with firewall configuration, VPN connectivity, and network equipment upgrades.
- Use networking tools and management interfaces to identify and resolve connectivity problems.
- Recognize complex issues that require escalation and collaborate with senior network engineers to resolve them.
Project Execution & Customer Support
- Travel to customer locations to perform new installations, upgrades, repairs, and troubleshooting.
- Work independently on assigned field tasks while coordinating with internal engineers, project teams, and customers.
- Communicate professionally with customers, providing clear explanations of work performed, issues discovered, and next steps.
- Document configurations, cable connections, network changes, equipment details, and completed work in company systems.
- Maintain organized, professional installations and leave customer environments clean and properly documented.
- Assist with planning, equipment staging, and identifying materials needed for upcoming installations.
- Participate in occasional evening, weekend, or overnight maintenance and installation projects.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 2+ years of hands-on experience installing, configuring, or supporting business network infrastructure, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Practical knowledge of TCP/IP networking, IP addressing, subnetting, VLANs, and basic routing.
- Understanding of how switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points work together.
- Experience installing or replacing physical network equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot network connectivity problems using a logical, step-by-step approach.
- Familiarity with Ethernet cabling, termination, patch panels, and cable testing.
- Comfortable using network equipment management interfaces and basic command-line troubleshooting tools.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers.
- Ability to work independently, stay organized, document work, and follow projects through completion.
- Willingness to perform physical field work, including equipment mounting, cable installation, and rack organization.
- Valid driver's license and driving record that meets company requirements.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs and safely perform required ladder or elevated work, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to travel throughout the United States for projects lasting up to five consecutive days.
- Availability for occasional evening, weekend, and overnight project work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Cisco Meraki MX, MS, and MR equipment or equivalent networking platforms.
- Experience supporting multiple small and mid-sized business environments, particularly within an MSP.
- Experience installing IP security cameras, wireless access points, and PoE devices.
- Familiarity with firewall rules, site-to-site VPNs, static routing, and inter-VLAN routing.
- Experience using cable testers, tone generators, and other network installation tools.
- Experience operating scissor lifts or boom lifts with appropriate training.
- CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Cisco Meraki certifications, or equivalent practical knowledge.
- Familiarity with network monitoring, documentation, or ticketing systems.
Opportunities to Learn
- More advanced routing and switching, including OSPF, BGP, and VXLAN.
- Network design, redundancy, and multi-site WAN connectivity.
- Advanced firewall configuration and network security.
- Wireless design, performance analysis, and troubleshooting.
- Network automation and other emerging technologies.
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
You don't need to know everything on day one. We're looking for someone who:
- Enjoys hands-on work. You're comfortable mounting equipment, pulling cable, working in network closets, and solving physical infrastructure problems.
- Understands the fundamentals. You can explain what a VLAN does, why a device isn't receiving an IP address, or how to troubleshoot an unreachable network.
- Takes ownership. You prepare before arriving, communicate problems early, and see work through to completion.
- Pays attention to details. You label cables, verify configurations, test your work, and document what changed.
- Works well with customers. You're professional, respectful of their environment, and able to explain technical issues without unnecessary jargon.
- Wants to grow. You're interested in becoming a stronger networking professional and learning from experienced engineers.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation based on experience.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- IRA with company match.
- Paid vacation, sick and personal time, plus paid holidays.
- Certification reimbursement and paid training opportunities.
- Exposure to a broad range of customers, technologies, and network environments.
- Opportunities to develop advanced networking skills and grow into network engineering responsibilities.
- A collaborative team that values technical problem-solving, accountability, and professional development.
